I wrote How to Drink to be the book I had always wanted for my own kitchen shelf. It was never going to be a gaudy cocktail A to Z and it's certainly not an impenetrable wine tome: the idea was simply to put drink into the context of our everyday lives. So in here you'll find suggestions for drinking well in every season from cocktails you can mix in a pitcher for summer barbecues to sloe gin to sip in October twilight. There is also a debate on how to make the best cup of coffee, advice on ice, a useful list of non-alcoholic drinks and recipes and ideas for what to eat with what. I had a lovely year writing this, sitting on my front steps in April sipping mint juleps and messing about in the kitchen with vodka shots and smoked fish when snow was falling. I hope you enjoy it just as much.

‘A splendid book. Victoria Moore is quite right – it’s not how much you drink but how you drink. Elevenses anyone . . . ?’ Fergus Henderson, chef and co-owner of St John’s Restaurant

‘I loved How to Drink. For the first time in years I have broken open a bottle of vodka for a Bloody Mary, remembered how much better mulled cider is than mulled wine, drawn a fresh kettle for tea. It is a spendid and convincing argument not just to drink more but to drink better.’ Joanna Weinberg, author of How to Feed Your Friends with Relish

‘Anyone who loves their food should heed this unmatchable tutorial in the art of enjoying drink; Victoria Moore succinctly puts every sip in lively context, banishing the guilt from the pleasure of it all.’ Rose Prince, author of The New English Kitchen
