Champagne. A few days ago I had breakfast in London with Dominique Demarville, the chef de cave at Veuve Clicquot. He told me that, not including the current release, the champagne house has 800,000 bottles of old vintage champagne in its cellars which it has now decided to sell - at a price, and in stages. The cheapest on offer now costs £125. This suggests that VC is sitting on over £80m of stock. Let nobody say the champenois have not done a good job at transforming their brand into a money-spinner.

Happy drinking,
Victoria
